Hey all, I am doing a new thread because the old one had all broken pics, hate that.
Anyway..Start at the beginning. This is a real slow build. I have been digging at it slowly, gathering parts, used and new.
I picked up this 78 CJ 7 Golden Eagle. It has a 304 3speed, dana 20 transfer case, model 20 rear, and dana 30 front. It was a rust bucket. It only took one cut to seperate the body from the frame. And the frame was in bad shape.

I found a frame on ebay for $25. well worth the 5 hour ride. also picked up a fiberglass tub from the same guy for $20. I had a burnt cowl from an engine fire.

I ended up selling the fiberglass tub on craigslist for $125 and picked up a real nice YJ tub for $200.

Here is some random pics of the tear down..Found this critter nest in the carb and in the bell housing.

When I seperated the transmission and transfer case got the last bolt out water started to pour out. It was nasty inside of the transmission, it is toast. The transfer case was fine just filthy from some leakage.

Some tear down pics..

Now on to some of the rebuilding part..I have been doing alot of dealing with 4wheeldrive hardware, you can really build a jeep from there catalog..
I rebuilt the Dana 20 transfercase

I picked up a 4" lift for $150, and Superior one piece axle shafts, complete with brakes and stuff, $100. Picked up a set of new polly bushings from 4wd.
Got the rear end under the frame getting ready to put the front axle under soon.

Well, I'll keep digging at it. Alot of small stuff, brake lines, fuel lines, nuts and bolts..all the small stuff adds up..

That's looking good man. You're making me want to re-do mine now. What's your plan, to graft that YJ tub on it? Is the wheelbase close enough to make it work or is it going to turn into a big project?

No the YJ tub is pretty much a bolt on. Just have to adjust the rear body mounts. They are the same wheel base.

That's sweet then. Kinda like the look of the CJ better but for what you paid for that tub I'd run it too.

Yea man, the small stuff adds up fast. Between nuts & bolts, paint and chemicals...
Plus other hardware store stuff, it can get outta control.

What are you going to do for the tranny & engine?
Are they salvageable? Ever think of putting in a modern EFI 4.0L
and new style tranny?

What size tire are you planning on running?
Is this gonna be a Moderate rig or more Hardcore?

For the tranny, I am going to try to find a T18-4 speed, FSJ or a Ford truck. I have a line on one now. The motor is going to just get a good freshing up. Nothing wrong with it. I have thought about the 4.0 or even the GM 4.3, I don't want to yet. I am going to run it moderate +. I want to keep it old school CJ with what it came with upgrades...at least for now

I would at least put a locker in the rear, and run
some 34s LTBs or even a small 35", it will be street worthy
but you can still go Cabke Creek & Wellsville and run the fun stuff.

That's great u got Alloy shafts for the AMC 20, that's a huge upgrade
for that axle. My first Jeep an '81 Full Size Cherokee came with a 20 in the rear
but I bought a Waggoneer for parts & swapped in front & rear 44s. I remember reading
not so good reviews of the Model 20, but with the one piece shafts I'm sure
it would hold 35s.

I can get you a good deal on Pit Bulls, maybe a 33x13.50 Rocker Radial would
be a good tire for you when the time comes.

If you decide to do a shackle reverse, I figured out a cheap & easy way
to make the kit yourself at home with some welding.

Its looking good. You've done alot cleaning up and prep to that thing.

You sure those shackles are going to work at that angle?
Looks like there behind the perches in this pick.

Keep picking at it, nice clean work.

THIS IS GONNA HURT!!!!!

Did you put new shackle hangers on it?

Maybe once those leafs get weighted down, they'll flatten out some
and help the shackles move out some. New leafs are a bitch to break in....
Once it's done, Flex it out & park it like that overnight.... Give the springs a chance to
soften up.

Lookin good, I like the silver axles... I almost went that route.

Is it a YJ frame with a YJ tub & CJ front clip?
Or is that a CJ frame with a YJ tub?

No, the shackle hangers came with the lift I bought used. The were maybe 5 rides on it all.
I'm glad I painted the axles silver, its hammered silver. I wasn't sure at first but really like it now.
It is a CJ frame with a YJ tub going on it. But it is all going to be CJ, dash, front clip

Since you’re using an AMC 20 rear axle are going to use one piece axles in lieu of the two piece one's that you now have?

On your spring pack loosen up the spring clamps that hold the pack together, remember leaf spring use friction to keep it up.......

I don't know you and the Chester Boyz are doing better then Cheeks and I are doing, he with his shoulder and me with a fractured wrist from the Old Man’s cane when I retrieved him from taking a 4:AM walk Friday morning………

Think Boo hoo!
